<Letter from Dean Douglas Elmendorf>

Dear Harvard Kennedy School Students and Alumni,
As dean of the Kennedy School, I extend my very best wishes to you all for this year’s Japan Trek. I had the pleasure of visiting Japan myself last summer, and I hold those memories dear.
Treks are an important tradition at the Kennedy School. Fully planned and implemented by students, treks offer invaluable opportunities to engage with and learn about diverse cultures, communities, and policy landscapes. These experiences can shape students’ future lives and careers.
To our students visiting Japan, I encourage you to make the most of this opportunity. Immerse yourselves in the country’s rich culture, tradition, and history. Talk with and listen to those around you. Sympathize with the loss and suffering caused by the tragic earthquake on the Noto Peninsula, which weigh heavily on my heart as well as yours. Use this time to widen your perspectives on global issues and understand the interconnectedness of our world.
To our alumni who are graciously hosting our students, thank you for your dedication to the Kennedy School and to helping us develop the next generation of principled and effective public leaders. I want to specifically thank the HKS Alumni Club of Japan and Chairman Yoshimasa Hayashi for hosting this event and arranging for our students to meet with key political and business leaders. I also want to publicly congratulate Chairman Hayashi on his recent appointment as the Chief Cabinet Secretary of Japan; it is always gratifying to see our alumni thrive as public leaders.
Thank you all for being a part of the Harvard Kennedy School community, and for the role that you play in this Japan Trek. I am deeply grateful that our exceptional cohort of students has the opportunity to take such an enriching journey, and I look forward to hearing about your experiences.

Sincerely,

Doug
